Privacy Policy
Last Updated: 03/11/2026
This policy explains how Desoline Inc. ("Desoline," "we," "us," or "our"), the owner and operator of pdfedia, collects, uses, and protects information when you visit pdfedia.com, download or use the pdfedia Windows application, or contact us (together, the "Services"). pdfedia is a PDF reader for Windows. It has no accounts, no payments, and no in-app advertising.
1. Information We Collect
Information you send us: when you email us or use the contact form on pdfedia.com, we receive the name, email address, subject, and message you provide, and anything else you choose to include. Please don't send sensitive personal information unless it is needed to answer your request. Providing this information is voluntary and you are not legally required to give it to us, but we need your name, email address and message to reply to you. Usage statistics are sent only if you agree, and pdfedia works the same if you don't.
Website: pdfedia.com uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count visits, only if you accept it in the cookie banner, counts visits with Desoline's own anonymous usage statistics (see Usage statistics below), and may use Microsoft Advertising's Universal Event Tracking (UET) to measure advertising performance (see Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising Tags and Microsoft Advertising below). The servers that deliver the website and the installer receive the technical information any web request involves, such as your IP address, browser type, and the page or file requested, and use it only to deliver the response and keep the Services secure.
Usage statistics (only if you agree): the first time you start pdfedia it asks whether it may send usage statistics ("Help improve PDFedia"), and it sends nothing unless you agree. You can change your choice at any time in Settings > Usage statistics; turning it off stops sending immediately. Usage statistics are sent only by official release builds, over HTTPS, to Desoline's telemetry service. They contain: the app name; a random install identifier (generated on your PC, stored locally, and not linked to your name or to any account); the type of event (first start, start, a heartbeat every 10 minutes while pdfedia is running and when your PC resumes from sleep, and exit); the app version; the operating system ("windows"); the build variant; and, with the exit event, how many seconds the session lasted. Like any internet connection, the telemetry service receives the IP address the request comes from. pdfedia does not send your documents, file names, file contents, or anything you type, and it does not upload crash reports.
Automatic updates: automatic updates are on by default. While they are on, pdfedia checks GitHub (api.github.com, the desoline/pdfedia-releases repository) for a newer version, and when one is available it downloads it from GitHub and installs it silently, without asking each time. GitHub receives the connection information any web request involves, including your IP address, and handles it under its own privacy statement. You can turn automatic updates off in Settings > Updates; pdfedia then stops checking.
When you open a document, the application reads only the specific file you choose (through the Open button, drag and drop, Recent files, or File Explorer's "Open with") — we do not browse or collect the rest of your file system.
pdfedia Windows Application Usage Data
To maintain and improve the application, Desoline may collect limited technical information when pdfedia is used, sent over HTTPS. This may include a random per-install identifier, application version, and operating system information.
This information is used to measure installations, understand application usage, monitor stability and performance, troubleshoot technical issues, and improve pdfedia.
The information collected is not intended to include your name, email address, screen contents, keystrokes, or the content, file names, or text of your documents.
pdfedia Android Application
The pdfedia Android app, distributed through Google Play, may send comparable limited technical data over HTTPS, such as app version, operating system version, crash logs, and a random per-install identifier. The Android app does not transmit the content of your documents to Desoline.
Google Play Information
The pdfedia Android app is distributed through Google Play, which processes certain account, device, and installation information under its own terms. Google's Privacy Policy is available at: https://policies.google.com/privacy
The data-handling practices described in this Privacy Policy are consistent with the Data Safety information provided on pdfedia's Google Play listing.
Files, Scanner, and Camera Access
If you import a document from your device, a cloud drive, a connected scanner, or your camera or webcam, pdfedia accesses only the specific file or image you select or capture. We do not browse or collect the rest of your file system, camera roll, or photo library.
2. Your Documents and File Content
pdfedia is designed to open, edit, fill, sign, annotate, merge, convert, and export your documents primarily on your own device. Most editing tools work without an internet connection.
Where a feature requires sending a file to our servers or a third-party processor to complete an action you requested (for example, a format conversion or an optional cloud-storage export), that file is used only to perform that action. It is not read, reviewed, mined, or used by us for any other purpose, including advertising, analytics, or training.
- Desoline does not sell the content of your documents.
- Files temporarily processed on our servers are deleted automatically once the operation completes.
- We do not retain permanent copies of your documents.
- Document content is never sent to advertising or analytics providers, including Microsoft, Google, or Massive.
3. How We Use Information
We use information to operate and maintain pdfedia, deliver the website and the installer, check for and deliver application updates, count installations and understand how the application is used (only if you agree to usage statistics), answer your messages and support requests, prevent fraud and keep the Services secure, and comply with the law.
4. Legal Bases for Processing
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, Desoline relies on your consent (usage statistics), the necessity of processing to provide the Services you requested (delivering the website, the installer, and updates, and answering your messages), our legitimate interests in operating and securing pdfedia, and compliance with legal obligations. Where processing is based on consent, you can withdraw it at any time; this does not affect processing that took place before.
5. Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising Tags
The pdfedia.com website uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count visits and see which pages are used. It records page views, approximate location (country or city), device and browser type, and a pseudonymous identifier stored in a first-party cookie. Google processes this data on our behalf. We do not turn on Google's advertising features and we do not use this data to show you ads.
Google Analytics loads only after you click Accept in the cookie banner. If you click Reject, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, it does not load and no analytics cookies are set. You can change your choice at any time under "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page, and you can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Google's privacy policy is available at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
We advertise pdfedia through Microsoft Advertising, which may use Microsoft Universal Event Tracking (UET) on the website to measure advertising performance, as described in the next section. If we add any other advertising or conversion-tracking technologies, we will update this Privacy Policy first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
6. Usage statistics
To understand how many people use PDFedia, we store one anonymous random identifier in your browser's local storage. It is replaced every 13 months and is used only for Desoline's own audience statistics: no advertising, and no sharing with third parties. You can opt out at any time with the "Opt out of anonymous usage statistics" link on this page. We then store a small opt-out marker in your browser (in local storage and a first-party cookie), and your browser stops sending statistics. We also honour Global Privacy Control (GPC): if your browser sends a GPC signal, no statistics are sent. If statistics from an opted-out browser still reach our server, they are discarded; we keep only a count of how many were discarded. The opt-out applies to this browser only, and clearing your browsing data removes it, so you would need to opt out again.
7. Microsoft Advertising and Universal Event Tracking (UET)
pdfedia uses Microsoft Advertising technology to understand how visitors reach the pdfedia.com website and to measure advertising performance and conversions.
Where Microsoft Universal Event Tracking (“UET”) or another Microsoft Advertising tracking technology is implemented, Microsoft may collect or receive personal data from visitors to pdfedia.com. Depending on configuration and consent, this may include browser and device information, website interactions, pages visited, referring information, advertising interactions, conversion events, cookie or advertising identifiers, and other technical information associated with advertising measurement.
Desoline may use this information to:
- Measure Microsoft Advertising campaign performance
- Understand whether visitors arrived through Microsoft advertisements
- Measure downloads and other conversions
- Attribute conversions to advertising campaigns
- Analyze and improve advertising effectiveness
Information collected or received by Microsoft is processed according to Microsoft's own privacy practices, described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement. You can manage personalized advertising from Microsoft at account.microsoft.com/privacy/ad-settings.
Where consent is required by applicable law, the Microsoft Advertising tag is subject to your consent choice. Desoline does not intentionally transmit names, email addresses, telephone numbers, mailing addresses, passwords, document content, or other directly identifying information to Microsoft through UET.
8. Contact Form
Messages sent through the pdfedia.com contact form (your name, email address, subject, and message) are transmitted over HTTPS to an email relay hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS Lightsail, Frankfurt, eu-central-1), which delivers them by email to Desoline support staff. We use them only to read and answer your message.
9. Optional Bandwidth Sharing (Massive)
The pdfedia Windows installer offers Massive (joinmassive.com), an optional, separately provided service that helps keep pdfedia free. Massive is offered on its own installer page with Accept and Decline buttons and is set up only if you select Accept. If you select Decline, Massive isn't set up and pdfedia works exactly the same.
If you accept, Massive uses some of your PC's unused processing power, storage, and internet bandwidth for tasks run for Massive's business customers, including routing publicly available web traffic through your internet connection, so the websites involved see your IP address. This may increase electricity use or reduce battery life and network performance. Massive runs in the background while pdfedia is running: closing pdfedia's window keeps pdfedia running in the Windows system tray, and the installer option "Start PDFedia when you sign in (runs in the tray)" is ticked by default, so pdfedia and Massive start when you sign in to Windows unless you untick it. Massive does not show its own tray icon; you control it from pdfedia. You can switch it off at any time in pdfedia under Settings > Bandwidth sharing ("Share spare bandwidth"), and choosing Exit from the pdfedia tray icon stops it. You can uninstall Massive on its own in Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps, and uninstalling pdfedia removes Massive too.
Massive is provided by Massive, not by Desoline, under Massive's own terms and privacy policy, and Massive acts as an independent controller of the traffic it routes and the information it processes. Desoline does not choose or receive the content of that traffic. Learn more: How Massive works · Massive terms · Massive privacy.
pdfedia itself stores your Massive choice (accepted or declined, and whether you later switched it off) on your PC. It is not included in usage statistics.
10. Service Providers and Third Parties
pdfedia relies on these providers, each processing information under its own privacy terms and our agreements with it:
- Google Cloud — hosting the pdfedia.com website
- Cloudflare — DNS for pdfedia.com and serving the installer from downloads.pdfedia.com (Cloudflare R2)
- Google Analytics for Firebase — counting visits to the pdfedia.com website
- Microsoft Advertising — advertising measurement and conversion tracking for the pdfedia.com website (see above)
- GitHub — hosting the release feed and update files used by automatic updates
- Amazon Web Services — hosting the email relay used by the contact form
- Massive — the optional bandwidth-sharing service, as an independent controller (see above)
Desoline does not sell personal information for money. If any processing constitutes a “sale,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising under applicable law, Desoline will provide legally required notices and opt-out mechanisms.
11. Other Disclosures
Information may also be disclosed where required for legal compliance or in response to lawful governmental requests, in connection with security investigations, to protect rights and property, or as part of a corporate transaction such as a merger or acquisition, subject to applicable law.
12. Your Choices
In the Windows application you can turn usage statistics (Settings > Usage statistics), automatic updates (Settings > Updates), and bandwidth sharing (Settings > Bandwidth sharing) on or off at any time. Choosing Exit from the pdfedia tray icon closes pdfedia and stops Massive. You can uninstall pdfedia, or Massive on its own, in Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
13. Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information; object to or restrict certain processing; request data portability; and withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. Contact support@desoline.com to exercise these rights. We may need to verify a request before fulfilling it.
Users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Israel, and other jurisdictions with similar frameworks may also have the right to lodge a complaint with their data-protection authority.
14. Data Retention
Information is retained only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy; different categories of information may have different retention periods. The Windows application does not send documents to our servers, so there are no document copies to retain.
15. International Data Transfers
Desoline and its service providers may process information in countries other than the country in which you reside. Where required by applicable law, we take appropriate measures relating to international transfers of personal information.
16. Data Security
Desoline uses reasonable administrative, organizational, and technical safeguards designed to protect information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. HTTPS protects the transmissions described in this policy, though no internet transmission, application, or electronic storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
17. Children's Privacy
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to use pdfedia, as stated in our Terms of Use and EULA. pdfedia is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. If we learn that personal information from a child has been collected in circumstances requiring parental consent, we will take appropriate steps to delete or otherwise handle it in accordance with applicable law. Parents or guardians can contact us at support@desoline.com.
18. Sensitive Personal Data
Your documents may contain sensitive information, such as tax, financial, medical, or identification details. pdfedia does not send your documents anywhere, and Desoline does not scan or mine their content.
19. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be reflected with a revised "Last Updated" date above and, where required by law, additional notice or a request for consent for material changes.
